Biography
Winifred Emma (Freda) Barnfather was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne on the 5th December 1912[1]. Her father was a Grocer's Manager and they lived in Gosforth, Northumberland[2]. She trained as a nurse at Whipps Cross Hospital, London between 1934 and 1938[3]. Not long after she joined the Territorial Army Nursing Service (TANS). The 1939 register shows her living in Tidworth House, Tidworth and her occupation as TANS Nurse.

Freda recalled her service in WW2 (along with all the TANS nurses she was granted an emergency commission in 1942[4]) and wrote it all down in a document which is transcribed here:
