Biography
Winifred Emma (Freda) Barnfather was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne on the 5th December 1912[1]. Her father was a Grocer's Manager and they lived in Gosforth, Northumberland[2]. She trained as a nurse at Whipps Cross Hospital, London between 1934 and 1938[3]. Not long after she joined the Territorial Army Nursing Service (TANS). The 1939 register shows her living in Tidworth House, Tidworth and her occupation as TANS Nurse.
