GOULD, Ellen Julia (Nellie)
Biography
Ellen Julia (Nellie) GOULD was born March 29, 1860 in Aberystwyth, Monmouthshire. Her father was a Shipping Agent. She trained at Royal Alfred Hospital, Sydney, New South Wales. She stayed on for two years and was then appointed matron of St Kilda Private Hospital, Woolloomooloo and in 1891 she became matron and superintendent of the training school of Sydney Hospital. She resigned in October 1898 to join the NSW Public Health Department and was matron of the Hospital for the Insane at Rydalmere in 1898-1900.
Nursing Service in the Boer War
Lady Superintendent Ellen Julia (Nellie) GOULD was sent by the Colony of New South Wales to care for the sick and wounded during the Boer War, serving from May 26, 1899.[1][2][3][4][5]
Sailed in the Moravian with 13 nursing sisters on 17 January 1900.
Nursing Service in WW1
On 27th September 1914 Nellie Gould enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force and served in Egypt, caring for Gallipoli casualties, followed by service in France and then England. She returned to Australia in January 1919 and was discharged on 3 March. She was unfit to take up nursing duties again and from 1920 she received a war service pension. In 1916 she was awarded the Royal Red Cross (RRC).
