Biography
Sister Amy Bertha JOEL trained at the St Marylebone Infirmary, Notting Hill, London[1]. She is noted as a “locally employed nurse” on the medal roll for No. 7 General Hospital, which means she would have made her own way to South Africa and then offered her services to the Army[2]. She joined the Princess Christian's Army Nursing Service (Reserve) on 16 February 1900[1]. Many locally employed nurses joined the Princess Christian's Army Nursing Service (Reserve) for the duration of the Boer War.
