Biography
Penelope FRATER was born 26 Jan 1869 in Merrylong Park, New South Wales. Her father was a Landowner/ Farmer. She trained at Sydney Hospital, Sydney, New South Wales[1].
Nursing Service in the Boer War
Sister Penelope FRATER was sent by the Colony of New South Wales to care for the sick and wounded during the Boer War, serving from January 19, 1900.[2][3][4][5]
Sailed in the Moravian with 13 nursing sisters on 17 January 1900.
Nursing Service in WW1
Enlisted on 27 September 1914 in the Army Nursing Service of the Australian Imperial Expeditionary Force to serve overseas. She sailed on the Braemar Castle from Alexandria to Marseilles to be part of the British Expeditionary Force at the 3rd Australian General Hospital and in January 1917 she was appointed Head Sister, returning to Australia in October 1918.
