Army Nursing Service before 1899
Superintendent Florence Ellen ADDAMS WILLIAMS enlisted in the Army Nursing Service (ANS) on October 1st, 1885. In 1898 she was serving at the Military Hospital Canterbury[1].
Nursing Service in the Boer War
She was due to leave England with the staff of the 7th General Hospital[2], and sailed for South Africa on the Norman on Feb 11th 1900[3]. The medal rolls, however, only indicate her serving with the 6th General Hospital in Johannesburg[4]. She appears on the Army Lists as a Superintendent in South Africa until 1902[5] [6] [7].

She transferred into Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS) on the 17th February, 1903[8]. The Army Lists for 1903 and 1904 list her as Matron at Netley[9] [10]. In 1905 she was awarded the Royal Red Cross[11] in recognition of:
her special devotion and competence in the nursing of the sick and wounded of His Majesty's Army, and of her highly successful efforts in inaugurating the new Nursing System at Netley."
She was promoted to Principal Matron[12] before resigning in 1907[13].
