Alice Ruth Allaway was born in Reading about 1872<ref>England Census 1881 RG11/ 1306 Reading, Berks</ref>. She trained at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading and joined the Princess Christian’s Army Nursing Service (Reserve) on July 11th 1900 (Service Number 732)<ref>War Office: Nominal Roll of Princess Christian’s Army Nursing Service (Reserve) September 30th 1900.</ref>.
